Webcast Replay - Best Practices in Building Your SAP Consulting Business Print E-mail

jonerp_full_logo.PNGVendor Webcast: Jon Reed of on Growing Your Consulting Business (and How SAP's SDN Subscriptions Can Help You Build Your Business)

On June 25, 2008, Jon Reed gave a presentation on the best strategies for becoming a successful independent SAP consultant and growing your consulting business. The content from that presentation is now available to readers.

This webcast represents Jon's best thinking on how to succeed in SAP. It's based on hard-won lessons learned since Jon first started writing on SAP career trends in 1995.

Although this webcast is designed for all aspiring SAP consultants, there are a couple points to keep in mind as you watch or listen:

The presentation was customized with the SAP Developer Network audience in mind. The material will be useful for all SAP consultants, but it was geared especially towards SAP technical professionals, in particular, SAP developers.

A main theme of the presentation is how the free online resources of SAP's online communities can help further consulting success. Jon also explains how SDN Software Subscriptions can provide a great value for those consultants who are serious about self-education and software development.

The presentation does not assume that the audience is already running a consulting business. Many consultants wanted to "go independent" but have never taken the leap.

The flow of the presentation is as follows:

- how to become (and remain) a successful SAP consultant.

- how to grow your SAP consulting business.

- how to leverage SDN Subscriptions to develop bona fide third party software solutions using your own protected SAP Namespace.

Including the question and answer session, the webcast is just under an hour in length.

Additional topics covered in the presentation:

Finding a marketable SAP niche with consistent demand.
Taking the plunge: accept that first independent project.

Why SAP technical and functional skill sets are converging, and the importance of using the BPX Community to become a Business Process Expert.

Developing new business skills:
Sales (ugh) and Marketing (in particular Internet Marketing)
Business management
Tax/incorporation issues

A major section of the presentation covers staying on top of SAP's technical evolution.

Jon also addresses the key role SDN (and SDN Subscriptions) can play in the process, including:

Helping you to remain on the "edge" of SAP technologies to remain marketable.
Reduce your risk and fear of failure and increase your "project confidence."

Jon explains that SDN Software Subscriptions provides a state-of-the-art NetWeaver instance to "sandbox" and "troubleshoot" any technical issues you are having with a client. He also looks at how SDN Subscriptions license enables you to sell your add-on applications, and why developing a third party add-on, widget, or application can add significant value to a consulting firm.
